Lui Shtini's painting developed out of a detailed analysis of the compositional elements in portraiture. In these two paintings, the idea of portrait has been divested of specificity. Both evoke human anatomy, yet they elude any literal reading and have become bulbous abstractions placed in the centre of monochromatic grounds, unavoidably appearing strange and enigmatic. The artist has painted them as if he were making a skin with different textures, painstakingly created by incisions of the palette in the thick layers of wet oil that seem to evoke the hair, the scalp and the folds of the skin.
