In the way that it combines a certain childlike naiveté with texture-based plastic density, the portrait recalls the paintings of Dubuffet and Klee and their references to non-Western funerary sculpture as well as Irving Penn’s photographs of New Guinean masks. The painting is a veritable manual of different techniques such as scraping the surface of the canvas, nervous gestures expressed in trails of paint, incisions, graphic elements and small chromatic interventions that underpin the compositional structure of the piece.
