Las joyas de la corona is a set of eight miniature silver reproductions of buildings or structures that symbolise political repression in the twentieth century: the headquarters of the Stasi (East Germany's Ministry for State Security) in Berlin, the Guantánamo naval base in Cuba (illegally set up on the island by the United States), the National Stadium in Santiago de Chile (used as a concentration camp following Pinochet's military coup in 1973), the headquarters of the KGB (the Soviet intelligence agency) in Moscow, the offices of the DGI (Cuban intelligence agency) in Havana, the Pentagon (headquarters of the United States Defence Department), the head office of the ESMA (the Naval Mechanics School, a clandestine detention and torture centre used during the Argentinean military dictatorship between 1973 and 1983) in Buenos Aires, and Villa Marista (a Cuban jail that houses political prisoners). By transforming these buildings into small silver jewels, Carlos Garaicoa invites us to reflect on the changing functions of these centres of repressive power. He himself has said that he conceived this piece by thinking of two kinds of citizens: those who live in political systems where human rights have been visibly repressed, and those—as in Europe—who believe they have solved such contradictions.
